Where is This Leading?

It would be nice if I could just put a question out there and have it answered for me. I feel like I am getting nowhere, and then, when I get there (nowhere), I am back again (nowhere).

Stages of life can be slow or fast.

Does this sound like your situation? Retirement years have a tendency to leave you directionless. This is my experience so far.

They can be boring, tedious, monotonous or hectic and full of too much stress. One can be just as bad as the other. Boring can be as stressful as a busy schedule. It’s true.

I want to be encouraging. I want to build others up, not tear down.
My writing seems so gloomy. I feel gloomy….sometimes. But at least I am aware of it and do know what to do.

Here are five things I have come up with that seem to help me get through one day better than the next:

A list helps me stay focused. It gives me a goal to work towards. It makes me feel a sense of accomplishment as I gradually check things off the list not matter how small.

I don’t know about you but when I work on something and finish it, I like to go back and look at what I have accomplished. It is a reminder, as I tend to be too hard on myself, that I was useful today.
A list helps me do that.

Has the shut down of society gotten the “best” of you? I miss my neighbors and walks with my friends. I miss the grandchildren stopping by or asking me to babysit. I do some….babysit.

If you don’t want to take a long walk sit outside on the step and spend sometime reading an article in your favorite publication or book. Get in the habit of reading to expand your mind. Shut off the phone.

Walk to check the mail or, even in the winter months you may be lucky to have a new snowfall so you can shovel you sidewalk or driveway.

Walk to a nearby market and buy some produce or a coffee.
It depends on where you live but fresh air is good medicine and if you are lucky a passerby may show up and you can wave to say hello. (I sure miss seeing people that would take time to talk to you.)

It is nice to be productive at something, but especially if it is fun and enjoyable to you. I used to run my own, although small business. I took in many orders. I had money coming in each week. I loved working with customers, different fabrics and being creative.

I was lucky to have a job doing what I love. I also have many hobbies.

A hobby can be as simple as putting together jigsaw puzzles or painting a rock. Some people love flowers and plants. You could learn how to make arrangements, or build a terrarium or press flowers.

Think long and hard about something “NEW” that may be entertaining and interesting to learn how to do. You will find yourself either frustrated or laughing. It will open a new world to you and it does not even have to cost much to get started.

Are you still wondering what your life has come to?
Have you stopped doing some of the things you used to enjoy?
Do you wonder why?

One of my first jobs was working in housekeeping at a nursing home. I didn’t like the work as much as I enjoyed talking to the residents. Mom was very good at seeing to it that we had plenty of elderly and those less fortunate around us to help. She did me a favor, bringing me to her many visits to grandparents, elderly aunts and my own sister who had her handicaps.

Find someone who is lonely, that would welcome your visit, if allowed during these restrictive times. Maybe they could use a couple hours to help with housework. Spring is around the corner here in Minnesota and soon lawns will need caring for and gardens.

If you are a writer here, maybe you can send some mail to a veteran serving, or send thank you’s to our police or firemen.

Do you like to bake? Is there an organization that would welcome some treats?

Can you think of anyone who may appreciate some free after school care, or tutoring?

It is endless what can be given, with what each of us has to offer.
I started cleaning (just two hours) once a month for my 92 year old father-in-law. His housekeeper retired.

I used to have a cleaning business years ago. It got to be too tiring. I am glad to be able to help him and didn’t realize that I needed him more than he needed me.

It feels good to give of your time, but I do get paid….and don’t do any of the vacuuming. He wanted to find his own self still useful!

#5 TAKE TIME WITH GOD – Relationship

I start my day, if not reading, listening to a station that will inspire me or plant God’s Word into my thoughts for the day. I can always tell why I have or had the day I did, if I spend time, or neglect time with God first and foremost each day.

I have bibles and other inspirational books laying on tables in every room of my home on purpose. I always want it to be easy for me to access His Word because I want it to become a part of me and change my heart and mind.

I am far from a perfect human being and I don’t know why I am going through the things I am right now, but know without God it would be so much harder.

God wants what is best for me. He has things to say to me. The more time I spend with Him the more I get to know Him as a child would their parent. We are here for such a short time and the most important thing I have to do…..even though I feel I am floundering right now…..is to be a LIGHT to a very dark world in which we live.

I pray my children will be drawn to Jesus because of the LIGHT they see in the lives of those that are believers.

As long as God’s Word is in your life…your faith will grow and you will see how that is manifested in your work, your family and who you become. For me….I read….for you it may be listening…or both.
Christian music carries a message too that is helpful for growth, if it is biblical based.

I rest my head on my pillow at night, imagining I am resting my head on Jesus’ lap while He strokes my hair and listen to the rippling of the river nearby. He is my hope and salvation. His grace sufficient.

Maybe things will be looking up when it is Springtime in Minnesota.
Today my internet was down but the technician helped me get it up and running again. That was good news.

That’s it! I just need more GOOD NEWS!

Good news……HE IS RISEN indeed and will help you through whatever you are dealing with today.

“He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul….” (Psalm 23)

I like to write for the pure enjoyment of writing short excerpts about life in general. I would want my writing to bring inspiration or encouragement to the faint-hearted or those looking for some direction, purpose, or meaning. I am searching daily for what it is God wants me to do and who he wants me to become. It is a growing pain for me. We all have something new we can learn and share with others.
