Cool, Crisp and Messy……Prepare for the SEASONS

I am not describing a Chocolate Mousse although I could go for one right now.
I am describing what it looks like outside my window this Fall day in Minnesota.
I am fortunate to have property with mature trees, mostly Cottonwoods.
My hummingbirds live up in the trees but I think they have left now for Winter.
I have not seen one visit my feeder all morning…just the bees….sad!

Fall is a colorful and beautiful time of year in our state. There is a lot of work to
put our gardens to bed. Soon I will be digging up my Gladiola bulbs and bringing
in my begonias.

I take my Geraniums out of their pots and store the root balls and
some 6 inch stems into brown bags shut tight in my crawl space. I have had
my Geraniums for years and continue to inherit those others want to toss out.

I’ve been collecting dead heads from marigolds for weeks now. They will give me blooms
all around our yard next year. The bees are having a feast this year. Sedums all
in bloom and I can make even more plants from what I have by dividing them.

I wish I had taken better care of my cucumbers though. We would have had so much
more of a harvest. I mistakenly thought they would do better in pots. Some critter
ate my sprouts last year so I had none, when I mounded the seeds on a hill.

Gardening and working with flowers and plants and shrubs is such a scientific
experiment for me each year. It is a lot like raising a family, or running a business,
or learning a new skill. It takes work, patience, research and experience and even
then the results are effected by so many other factors.

Light, water, soil, weather and the time you spend pruning, weeding, trimming, feeding….and removing bugs that might harm the plant. Location plays a part and the
quality or lack there of can be good or bad.

It is so much fun to work with plants and wish I could spend even more time with them. Soon the snow will cover the landscape and I will spend more time indoors.

If we spend so much time and investment in such things as this, what are we doing to grow our own lives that will last eternally? Do we show any signs of new growth, fruit, hardness to fight off that which might destroy us? What are we doing about the messy things in our lives?

Daily reading of God’s Word helps us to grow in Christ. Do you want to be kinder, more
thoughtful, have patience, be more gentle? Do you wish you had more self-control?

God’s Word can change our mind and hearts to be like Jesus and build us up into a person of character, integrity and purpose like he had. It will take time. It takes effort and work.
If you don’t like to read, study, examine or research. Start small. Just a verse. Just a chapter.

Read about people….Ruth, Noah, Jonah, Esther…..
Read about events……the crucifixion, the birth, the journey out of Egypt…..
Read about battles….Jericho, David and Goliath….

There is poetry, adventure, suspense, romance, competition, miracles…..
Talk of carpentry, baking, architecture, gardening, shepherding, pottery making, wineries….

Celebrations like weddings, baptisms, Passover meals, funerals…..
The Bible is the most timeless, truthful, compassionate and compelling book you will ever read. It is the only book that will help you make the biggest and most important decisions
in you life.

Ask Jesus to help you understand. Ask Jesus to help you remember verses. Ask Jesus to
bring you to a part in the Bible that you need for today.

If we are in Christ, we can not grow to maturity without learning from the Master.
God the Father has things he want to teach you and don’t worry about understanding what you read or not. God will give you understanding, in time.

Throughout the day I have my Bible with me….not always physically, but in my mind. Some favorite verses I will write down and carry with me until I have memorized them.
I can share with others if it seems like the right time or they are ready to hear from me, or I may put the verse in my own words, breaking it down more simply.

I may say to the grandchildren, something that is true, from God. With my grandson, a preschooler, we will talk about the beautiful world God made for us to enjoy. “Look at all those beautiful colors in the trees. Look at all the different shapes of trees there are.” I may point out a rainbow in the sky and tell them about Noah and why it is in the sky.

You never know where a conversation will lead. But, I do know one thing before I leave
this world. I want to know that I did all that I could to share the Gospel with my family,
friends, and those I meet. I need to do that more. Not to be preachy…less is more, in my
case, I have learned.

Now, I just give literally….sometimes, one or two words, and it may
just be what they need to hear. People usually find Jesus more by what we DO…than
anything we have to SAY, anyway.

Without God’s Word in my life I would not even act or behave the way I do now.
I try to keep verses that speak to me in my pocket until I have memorized them,
or at least thought about them awhile. I want His word glued into my thoughts. It
can walk with me….stay with me. God’s Word has transformed me. I know, because
people who knew me long ago, told me….I’ve changed.

People will notice a difference in you and you will too, when you spend more time in God’s Word, than you do already. You will start handling things differently, think a different way about things, treat and see others differently. You will have more compassion and under-
standing. It will change you inside and out. Read God’s Word daily. It is food for your soul.

“For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12)

I like to write for the pure enjoyment of writing short excerpts about life in general. I would want my writing to bring inspiration or encouragement to the faint-hearted or those looking for some direction, purpose, or meaning. I am searching daily for what it is God wants me to do and who he wants me to become. It is a growing pain for me. We all have something new we can learn and share with others.
